Lifeguard Training
This certification course gives participants the skills and knowledge needed to become certified lifeguards. It offers up-to-date information on how to anticipate and prevent problems and how to take action to help those in danger. It also covers safety and survival skills every swimmer needs to know, accident prevention, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, and first aid in aquatic environments. Complete attendance is required and all e-learnings must be completed before the in-class portion of the training.

ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid and Oxygen Administration
YMCA Lifeguarding
YMCA Junior Lifeguard
This aquatics leadership development program is designed to teach participants skills they will use in the aquatics environment. The Junior Guard program introduction course offers participants the opportunity to earn volunteer hours and gain leadership skills. At the end of the program, participants will have the opportunity to become certified in:
- ASHI Basic Life Support
- ASHI O2 (Oxygen)
- ASHI First Aid
Participant Commitments
- Participants must be strong swimmers. They will be required to tread water for 2 minutes and swim 100 yards.
- Weekly group meetings and required ASHI training at your home center
- Must complete a minimum of 50 volunteer hours throughout the summer (available hours vary; shifts are chosen by the participant)
Participant Duties
Junior Guard program participants will assist the aquatics department including greeting members, distributing swim bands, helping with swim lessons and/or swim team, aquatics summer camp, pool maintenance duties, data entry, and special events.
Junior Guards provide an essential part of our ability to ensure excellence in safety and member experience.

YMCA Lifeguard Instructor v6 Certification
This course trains and certifies currently certified YMCA Lifeguards to become Lifeguard Instructors. This course provides Lifeguard Instructor Candidates the background of the YMCA Lifeguard Program and the skills to train and certify others in CPR PRO for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid for the Community and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
